In the first half of 2020, organizations were forced to react to unprecedented global conditions to ensure business continuity. In the learning industry specifically, organizations quickly transitioned from instructor-led training (ILT) and on-the-job training (OJT) to a heavier reliance on self-directed learning. Classroom training was replaced with Zoom sessions, PowerPoint presentations and PDFs were distributed to support self-directed learning, and web-based training was developed at a rapid pace. These tactics served what was a very unexpected and pressing need, but they were not sustainable for the long-term.
